Learn HCX – Topic 5 – Site Pairing and Deploying Fleet Components

Once you deployed HCX manager, configured and activated with Cloud HCX instance then you are ready for site pairing and deploying fleet components. In this topic, we are going to cover Site Pairing and Deploying Fleet Components. You may also refer to below related topics.

Site Pairing and Deploying Fleet Components:-

Login to on-premises vCenter and click on HCX icon at the home page.
Scroll down and click on new site pairing.
You will get below screen.

New site pair

Click on register new connection.

Update below information to connect to cloud side HCX.

Wait till your site gets connected. you will get the site connection details once connection is establish. Now you are ready for deploying fleet component. Click the components which you want to install.

You will required total three IP for these components. Two IP for HCX interconnect service and one IP for network extension.
Enter following details for HCX interconnect.

Enter Network Extension.

L2C

Click on next and Finish. Its time to wait for 15-20 minutes to deploy these appliance and get ready.

Learn HCX – Topic 3 – How to Obtain Activation Key for HCX?

In last topics, we gone through with the overview and Components of HCX. This blog will help to collect activation key for HCX running on AWS and IBM.

For VMware with HCX running on AWS:

Login to console.cloud.vmware.com
Open VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension
Click on Activation Keys
Create Activation Key
Create an HCX Cloud key for VMware Cloud on AWS
Create an HCX Enterprise key for HCX On premises

HCX in IBM Cloud

Login at IBM Cloud for VMware Solutions Portal
Click on HCX on IBM
Click on Learn More
Scroll to bottom.
Select On premises HCX
Provide Instance Name
Click Next to place the order
Copy the activation key.
Use this activation key on premises. The IBM Cloud is activated automatically during provisioning.

Learn HCX – Topic 2 – What are the Components of HCX?

In my last blog we have understood About HCX, Why do we need HCX , What are the benefits we can avail from HCX.

Now its time get some more details about HCX. What are their Components and their work?

HCX Manager:

First we need to install HCX manager to cloud side for VMware solutions, Its a OVA file specific to cloud side in conjunction with an NSX edge load balancer firewall which is configured specifically for the HCX role.

Then, On-Prem HCX manager is an OVA image file which provides the UI functionality for Controlling HCX. The client side HCX manager is responsible for registration with the target side HCX manager and creating a management plane between the on-premises and target side.

Fleet components:

HCX WAN Interconnect (CGW)

This is commonly known as Cloud gateway which is basically create an encrypted tunnel for workload migration (be it vMotion or bulk migration ) over the internet and private lines to the cloud side while providing traffic engineering and virtual machine mobility.

HCX WAN optimizer

It works along with CGW, Its a Silver Peak™ WAN optimization appliance use for deduplication and line conditioning and bring the performance to LAN environment.

HCX Layer two extension(L2C):

It also create an encrypted tunnels for the data and control plane corresponding to stretched layer 2 traffic and helps to allows keeping the same IP and MAC addresses during a Virtual Machine migration.Network Extension with Proximity Routing ensures that forwarding between virtual machines connected to extended and routed networks, both on premises and in the cloud, is symmetrical.

VMware Hybrid Cloud Extension, commonly known as HCX is a solution for App Mobility and Infrastructure Hybridity Across Any-to-Any vSphere. This is one of strongest migration tool from VMware which can help to migrate workload from on-premises to Cloud(e;g: IBM, AWS). Hybrid Cloud Extension is famous to facilitates secure and seamless app mobility and disaster recovery across on-premises vSphere platforms and VMware Clouds.

Advantages of HCX:

Infrastructure Hybridity

HCX uses features such as secure proxy for vMotion; secure network extension; and high-throughput, WAN-optimized, load-balanced multisite interconnects.

Lower TCO

HCX enable hybrid cloud migration without retrofits, upgrades to existing sites or configuration modifications, such as IP address. Enable Auto VPN setup.

Disaster recovery

In the event of a disaster, Hybrid Cloud Extension can recovers the networking layer. Traffic routes are maintained as before the disaster, resulting in high-speed disaster recovery with low downtime.
