Learn HCX – Topic 10- How to Run Test Fail-over for Virtual Machine using HCX

In last blog we protected your virtual machine, now we will perform test fail over of your virtual machine.

When you are ready to run test fail over,  log in to your Cloud HCX manager and go to Services tab.

On left hand side you will find disaster recovery  option, click on disaster recovery and select you virtual machine and click test recovery.Screenshot-from-2018-08-09-17-59-26.png

Verify the VLAN or VXLAN and click finish to recover machine at cloud side for testing.

Learn HCX – Topic 9- How to Protect Virtual Machine for DR via HCX

As you know HCX can also be use as DR solution. So today we will know how can i configure my virtual machine for DR.

You need to login to on premises virtual center and right click on virtual machine which you want to configure of DR. Go to hybridity actions and click on protect VM

DR.pngNow you need to define below listed options at cloud/DR site:

  • Destination container
  • Storage
  • Replication interval
  • Snapshot Interval
  • Number of snapshot to keep
  • Destination network

Once you define all option click finish.

Learn HCX – Topic 8 – Steps to Perform Reverse Migration

When we say reverse migration it means migration work load from cloud to on premises.

To perform reverse migration you need to log in to your on premises vCenter and click on HCX plugin.

Go to Migration tab and click on migrate virtual machine.

Now you need to tick mark reverse migration. Once you select reverse migration , your cloud vCenter inventory will be populated to you.

Now you  need to select virtual machine which you want to bring back to on premises and define  migration option shown in below screen shot. You have to specify the destination cluster, destination datstore , Type of disk provision and most important is type of migration (vmotion or bulk migration) and select or verify the correct VXLAN or VLAN where you want to place your machine. Once you define all option click next.

Review and click on  finish to start migration.HCX7

Monitor the task till it gets complete.

Learn HCX – Topic 7- Steps to Migrate Virtual Machines using HCX

In last blog we learned type of migration we have in HCX. Today  we will come to know about  the steps involved during migrating virtual machine from on premises to cloud

You need to log in to on premises virtual center , Go to home page and click HCX

Go to migration  tab  in right pane and click migrate virtual machineHCx2

On left hand side you will see the data center details of your on premises virtual center. Select the cluster from where you want to migrate the virtual machine. On right hand side you will find the name of the virtual machine from that cluster

Select the virtual machine which  you want to migrate to cloud. You also need to define the migration option shown in below screen shot. You have to specify the destination cluster, destination datstore , Type of disk provision and most important is type of migration (vmotion or bulk migration) and select or verify the correct VXLAN where you want to place your machine. Once you define all option click next.

HCX3Verify  the values and click finish to start migration. We have select vMotion so it will the live migration. If you select the bulk migration please speci fy the cut over time else machine will be fail over immediately after replication.

Let’s discuss type of migration which we can perform via HCX.

vMotion Migration:

This is the live migration of virtual machine from on-premise to Cloud without downtime. It happen in sequence which means you can plan a job for multiple VM’s but it will happen one by one. Also there is limitation that after migration VM will not be retained on on-premise site.

Bulk Migration:

You can plan multiple VM to migrate to cloud at same time with low downtime. Good thing is that migration happens in parallel and virtual machine retain at on premise side after migration. Important thing is that you have to plan cut over. It can be done in two ways.

  1. Immediate fail-over starts migration immediately which includes cut-over.
  2. Scheduled fail-over where initial data sync starts but the cut-over will happen only at a scheduled time.

Please note that forward and reverse migration is supported for both the above options.

Cold Migration:

Performing migration of Power Off machine are considered as Cold Migration. You can  perform multiple migration together and source VM is not retained On prem site.

Once you deployed HCX manager, configured and activated with Cloud HCX instance then you are ready for site pairing and deploying fleet components. In this topic, we are going to cover Site Pairing and Deploying Fleet Components. You may also refer to below related topics.

Site Pairing and Deploying Fleet Components:-

  • Login to on-premises vCenter and click on HCX icon at the home page.
  • Scroll down and click on new site pairing.
  • You will get below screen.

New site pair

  • Click on register new connection.

  • Update below information to connect to cloud side HCX.

  • Wait till your site gets connected.  you will get the site connection details once connection is establish. Now you are ready for deploying fleet component. Click the components which you want to install.

  • You will required total three IP for these components. Two IP for HCX interconnect service and one IP for network extension.
  • Enter following details for HCX interconnect.

  • Enter Network Extension.

  • Click on next and Finish. Its time to wait for 15-20 minutes to deploy these appliance and get ready.

Once we got the  HCX instance on Cloud side from AWS or IBM cloud portal then we have to get On-prem side  ready for HCX installation and configuration. First you have to download the OVA for  HCX Enterprise Client .

Let’s proceed with the information for deploying and configuration of HCX.

Procedure to download OVA:

  • Connect to the HCX Cloud system using HCX cloud URL.
  • Go to Administration> System Updates tab
  • The OVA can be directly downloaded by clicking the ‘HCX Enterprise Client  button Or optionally copy the download link, by using the ‘Copy Link ‘ button to download via a different system .

You are now done with the downloading part. Now once you have OVA file available, let’s proceed with Installation of HCX Manager at Client side.

Installation of HCX Manager:

You need to log in source or on-premises Virtual Center and follow the below procedure.

  • Right click the management cluster > click Deploy OVF Template
  • Review the details > Click Next > Accept the EULA > Click Next
  • Name the HCX Manager appliance > Select a Folder > Click Next
  • Select the management datastore (Typically where vCenter is deployed)
  • Select the management network (Typically where vCenter is connected)
  • Provide passwords for the admin and root default users.
  • Expand and fill the Network properties, DNS & Services sections (NTP is required)
  • a. In the Network Properties section, provide the VM hostname, and IP address configurations.
  • b. In the DNS section, provide the local DNS server and Domain Name Search List.
  • c. In the Services Configuration section, provide the local NTP server (required). Optionally enable SSH.
  • Click Next. Finish.

The OVA deployment binds HCX to vCenter as an Extension. It may take up to 5min to bring the appliance up for the HCX Manager appliance to fully initialize after deploying the OVA.
